What was for dinner

I knew Humphrey through Athelstan Masonic Lodge in Atherstone. He played the organ and piano at our meetings, his music bought life to the lodge and festive board. His enthusiasm and commitment was always evident. I can remember when we walked into the temple, Humphrey would be at the organ playing it like a grand piano. He always put so much effort and concentration into it, however when he raised his head and I caught his gaze he would always welcome me with a big thumbs up and great big smile.
He was a joy to talk to and spend time with, especially at our meals afterwards. Many occasions a few of us would end up late in the bar chatting about the mysteries of the universe and such like.
When I got married, I asked if he would play the organ at the ceremony, to which he said yes of course. We were delighted as we knew his playing would enlightened our marriage, and we were not disappointed. He even gave us back the £50 fee from the church for playing, as was his generosity.
The one thing that always springs to mind with Humphrey though is his tie and shirt. You knew he was a social animal and there was always a little bit of last night's dinner on his tie or shirt. All down to a jolly good night, with good company he would say. I can see him now, enjoying good food, wine and friendship. He was an undoubtedly extremely clever, gifted and talented man, who had humility, support and compassion alwaya on his mind. Bo matter how he was, even when he was poorly gis first question would be how are you Jon, and how is Jo?
I'm pleased and honoured to have been a friend of his.
